I think about an invisible string that ties me and the world. I don’t
know whether I seize the things I cannot put down on the string,
or I am dragged being tied with the s tring. The establishment of
this power that connects me and the world is sometimes matched
or sometimes loose. But its immutable unchangeability is that I am
paradoxically and naturally under the world by this string.
Even in the case that I am able to untie the string, I cannot help
passing the initiative to the world around me as far as I try to
recognize my existence and worth in the world around me.
Even though the string leaves me with a sense of futility, it seems
to be almost instinctive. For me the tension associated with the
string is meant to be the tension between me and attention from
other people. Through my work, I try to grasp the truth of its
instinctive power that seems to be hard to relieve the situation.
『Faux-Naif(Feign)』 is an attempt to take the initiative in ‘a rope
game’ with the world, by revealing the truth of the string that I
might seize or be tied with. The string that the figure is seizing in
『Feign: Instinct』and 『Feign: Putting the Cart before the Horse』
is the metaphor of this tension between me and the world.
Perhaps it might be natural that we just ignore and follow them.
It may be natural as wind is divided according to gravity & inertia.
However being natural is not always comfortable. For example,
skiers slide downward towards a slope according to the workings
of gravity on the board, parachutists fall free from the airplane,
and skaters slide through the wind according to the moment of
inertia of the skater, all of which are natural phenomena according
to physical principles. But even in its enjoyable moments there
is some risk involved along with a shadow of horror. Like this,
I understood the discomfort of being natural and attempted to
shake up common notions that bind us. The contrast between
elegant, graceful hanbok(Korean traditional clothes) that
we usually wear during ceremonies and ordinary, somewhat
funny behavior, the contrast between traditional clothes and
contemporary artifacts(ordinary things), which shows our ideas
are sometimes uncritical common notions. Our common notions
are broken by traditional clothes and our modern day lives
coexisting together, and by a kind of senseless irony or FauxNaif(Feign)
with a two-faced woman. After all 『Faux-Naif(Feign)
』 is a confessional work of art to grasp my true substance in the
tension between me and the world. Through such work, I come to
find my inner self that maintains the ‘independent tension relation’
that secures a free region from the world’s reckless dominance.
I intend to just shake up this stable order of tension without
breaking it. You can say artists are spokespersons of ordinary
people’s instinctive desire. Artists possess finer sensibility as
compared with ordinary people and for this reason, they are
professionals who are sharply aware of the critical issues that
ordinary people feel vaguely and irresolutely, and
who clearly express the issues that many people empathize
but do not properly express. Artist’s job is to represent the
underrepresented, without taking out. Since visitors evaluate and
respond to things that artists express, consciousness as an artist
has to be expressed forthrightly and comfortably, and it is better
to be conveyed with some wit, I think. Consciousness as an artist
would have to be severe, but its mild voice is enough to express it.
While the invisible string between the world experience
and me, and the tension relation may not be broken at first,
I’d like to provide art appreciation and comfort simultaneously
for some visitors who may empathize
discomfort due to the tension relation.
