The wish to be seen is closer to instinct than we think. Where eyes gather, we want to spread ourselves out larger. 〈Coy: Come into Bloom〉 began with the thought that a peacock fanning its feathers to draw attention resembles the heart that displays itself inside a smartphone. Looking back at how I had grown more sensitive to the gaze within a small screen than to real space, I layered the desire to be seen over the peacock’s gesture. Come to think of it, people too tend to unfold themselves a little more splendidly before someone’s attention. That is less simple showing off than a wish to have one’s existence acknowledged. The ‘blooming’ in this work is a look at that moment of revealing oneself within the gaze of others.
