Guri City's Joseon Royal Tombs Talk Concert to Be Held on the 9th of Next Month

A Walk Through Kim Hyun Jung's Naesoong Story

In Guri, Korean painter Kim Hyun Jung, an idol of the Korean art world known for her 'Naesoong Story' paintings, meets the Joseon royal tombs through a talk concert. Planned as part of the Joseon Royal Tombs Cultural Belt project involving the municipalities where the royal tombs are located -- Guri, Namyangju, Nowon-gu, and Seongbuk-gu -- the event will be an intriguing occasion themed 'Kim Hyun Jung's Joseon Royal Tombs Walk,' held at Guri Art Hall on December 9.

The talk concert weaves together artist Kim Hyun Jung's lecture and a musical performance, exploring an artistic approach to the Joseon royal tombs -- a cultural heritage site -- through the meeting of heritage and art, and seeking new directions for cultural-content creation by newly applying and reinterpreting tradition.

In particular, Kim Hyun Jung's 'Naesoong Story' -- known for its distinctive contrast achieved by combining Western collage with East Asian ink-and-wash coloring techniques -- has won public affection by giving hanbok-clad women, long confined by the weight of tradition, a playful sense of freedom, so interest in this performance is expected to run especially high.

The performance will be emceed by Moon Hyun-woo, head of the Arirang School and leader of the Arirang Wandering Troupe, a cultural planner devoted to Korean culture, and will feature a performance by the gugak (traditional Korean music) girl group Gukbap. The event promises to be a special occasion offering inspiration especially to those searching for their dreams and to those hoping to forge new careers by bringing tradition and art together.

Meanwhile, artist Kim Hyun Jung is currently pursuing a doctorate in Oriental painting at the graduate school of Seoul National University's College of Fine Arts. Her 2014 solo exhibition 'Naesoong Olympics' set the record for the most visitors since the opening of Gana Art Center. She has also drawn attention as the youngest artist invited to exhibit in a show spotlighting the history of Korean painting at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, following a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and was the first Korean visual artist named to Forbes' '30 Under 30 2017' list.

Admission is free, but advance reservations are required. Reservations can be made through the Joseon Royal Tombs Cultural Belt website (http://www.linkroyaltombs.or.kr) or each municipality's website. (Inquiries: 031-550-2550)
