Korean painter Kim Hyun Jung spotlighted the reality faced by today's youth through a work in her 'Naesoong' series.
Kim Hyun Jung recently unveiled the piece 'Naesoong: Sampo Generation, Miss Kim' on her Instagram, along with an explanation of the work.
The work is notable for metaphorically expressing the reality of the 'Sampo Generation' (the generation giving up on three things -- dating, marriage, and children) through a figure riding a mechanical rodeo. On the surface, it looks like she is riding a flashy golden bull, but in reality she is straining with all her might not to fall off, symbolically showing the precarious, unstable life of today's youth.
Kim Hyun Jung said, 'These days, people talk not just about giving up three or four things, but about an "N-po generation" giving up on countless things,' referring to the changing reality young people face in society. She added that through the work, she wanted to express the gap between appearance and reality, and the image of youth holding on and enduring.
Notably, the piece draws attention for capturing both the distinctive aesthetics of Korean painting and a contemporary message by adding ink wash, light coloring, and collage techniques onto traditional hanji paper.
Meanwhile, Kim Hyun Jung continues her steady artistic activity through the 'Naesoong' series, unpacking the lives and emotions of contemporary Koreans with humor and satire, and actively communicating with the public through social media.
