[MyDaily = Reporter Kwak Myeong-dong] Rosa Salazar, who plays the lead role of “Alita” in the film “Alita: Battle Angel,” which has continuously held the No. 1 spot at the foreign-film box office since its release, and director Robert Rodriguez are drawing attention for their extraordinary love of Korea.
Set in the 26th century, the action blockbuster “Alita: Battle Angel” tells the story of Alita, a cyborg girl who has lost her memory. Rosa Salazar, who plays the title character Alita, has drawn attention by showing boundless affection for Korea following her first visit to the country for a promotional event last month.
First, a video of her enjoying Korean beef with YouTuber Korean Englishman went viral, surpassing 1 million views in just 14 hours after its release on the 6th — the fastest such record in the history of the Korean Englishman channel. That pace outstripped previous collaborations with the channel during recent Korea visits for “Deadpool 2,” “Maze Runner: The Death Cure,” “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” and “Avengers: Infinity War.”
In the video, Rosa Salazar and Robert Rodriguez rave about Korean food as they quickly polish off eight servings of sundae (Korean blood sausage) along with soju and doenjang-jjigae. Salazar in particular ate whole raw garlic cloves alongside Robert Rodriguez, who demonstrated Korean-style soju drinking techniques, fully immersing themselves in Korean culture and drawing an enthusiastic response from netizens.
Comments such as “Actress Rosa is so down to earth” (@eung*****), “Honestly so likable haha” (@jina***), “Rosa's Korean is really good” (@jae*), and “Wow, first time I've seen someone eat garlic that well on Korean Englishman” (@gaem***) kept pouring in from netizens captivated by Rosa Salazar's charm, and as of 12:40 p.m. on February 8, the video ranked No. 2 on YouTube's trending videos with roughly 1.8 million cumulative views.
Rosa Salazar also showed a heartfelt affection for Korea during her first visit, over January 24 (Thu.) and 25 (Fri.), despite it being her first time in the country. On her personal Instagram, she posted photos with Korean captions, drawing attention. She uploaded a photo of herself in hanbok worn during the Naver Movie Talk Live event, holding “Korean painter Kim Hyun Jung's Alita,” along with a “God-tier experience” certification shot, red carpet photos, and even a Korean greeting reading “Saranghae” (“I love you”), conveying her affection for Korea.
In particular, moved by the enthusiastic cheers of local fans who visited the red carpet, Rosa Salazar was even seen shedding tears, surprising fans both in Korea and abroad. She also continued wearing a pair of trendy “insa” sunglasses she received as a gift during a broadcast interview while in Korea, even after the interview ended, openly showing her love for every aspect of Korean culture, old and new.
Amid the buzz generated by Rosa Salazar's unabashed affection and love on her first visit, “Alita: Battle Angel” is now playing to great acclaim in theaters nationwide.
