Four-product series draws fierce popularity

Works out to one card issued every 13 seconds

[Herald Economy = Reporter Do Hyun-jung] 'Card Principle,' the ambitious series Woori Card launched last April, has topped 1 million cards issued just five months after launch, showcasing its red-hot popularity.

Woori Card announced on the 30th that the four products in the series — 'Card Principle Point,' 'Card Principle Discount,' 'Card Principle Shopping' and 'Card Principle L.POINT' — have together passed 1 million cards issued. The series, which first entered the market as 'Card Principle Point,' showed unusually strong popularity by topping 100,000 cards within three weeks of launch. Even after the lineup was expanded with 'Discount' and 'Shopping' last June, popularity held steady, and this month the series set a record by surpassing 1 million cards. In the card industry, 500,000 cards has typically been seen as the benchmark for a hit product, but as product categories have diversified recently, even passing 100,000 is now considered a strong result.

Asked about the popularity of the 'Card Principle' series, Woori Card cited its thorough service, which guarantees industry-leading levels of point accrual and discounts, as well as its careful product design offering extra accrual or discounts in categories customers use frequently. A refined design is also cited as one of the drivers of its popularity. 'Card Principle' drew on work by Korean painter Kim Hyun Jung, which reinterprets Korean beauty with a contemporary sensibility. The card surface is given a special finish that emphasizes the visual effect of the artwork appearing as though set in a picture frame.

Woori Card plans to release further products, including a card tailored for office workers and a mileage-type card, and expects to reach 2 million cards issued around the end of this year.

A Woori Card official said, "'Card Principle' strengthened profitability by cutting unnecessary add-on services and channeling the savings into strengthening core services," adding, "Customer satisfaction has risen further as a result, creating a win-win for both the company and our customers."
