Changnyeong County held the 114th Changnyeong Citizens' Academy humanities lecture at 2 p.m. on the 25th at the Changnyeong Culture and Arts Center's small performance hall.
Lecturing under the title 'Healing Through Naesung, by Korean Painter Kim Hyun Jung,' Kim Hyun Jung — named in 2017 by the American business magazine Forbes to its list of 'Asia's Most Influential Under-30s' — is a 21st-century genre painter who depicts Korean beauty with a contemporary sensibility through wit and satire.
Known as the 'idol of Korean painting,' Kim has expanded the ways she connects with the public well beyond her ceaseless studio practice, through frequent lectures and writing, social media and blogging, and corporate collaborations, helping to narrow the gap between traditional art — often felt as difficult and unfamiliar — and today's general public.
Taking the podium that day in elegant hanbok, lecturer Kim Hyun Jung delivered a fresh and passionate talk under the eye-catching title 'Healing Through Naesung,' using a variety of materials and quizzes pitched to her audience's level to introduce the motivations and methods behind her work along with major examples of Korean and contemporary art, helping the audience feel art was something approachable.
The next Changnyeong Citizens' Academy lecture will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23, with Dr. Jeong Ji-cheon, director of Ilsan Oriental Medicine Hospital, speaking on 'The Longevity Secrets of Prominent Families.'
