The word that runs through the body of work of Kim Hyun Jung (b. 1988), the artist dubbed the "idol of Korean painting" after making Forbes' 2017 list of "30 Under 30 Asia," is "Naesoong" (feigned innocence). The series, which is also a self-portrait using the artist herself as model, captures the contemporary social landscape through a woman in hanbok caught in a starkly realistic scene of everyday life.
The artist defines Naesoong as "a lie that isn't entirely disagreeable, because you can see straight through it."
The irony and satire embedded in each painting's story are expressed through a distinctive style that combines traditional ink-and-light-color painting with Western collage technique.
Kim Hyun Jung's work, which delivers a message of empathy through sharp yet delightful genre scenes, can be found at Herald Art Day's June premium online auction.
