The Idol of Korean Painting, Genre Painter Kim Hyun Jung, Gives a Lecture

[Dream Journal] The 1,032nd Jangseong Academy has invited Korean painter Kim Hyun Jung, known as the '21st-century genre painter,' to give a lecture on the theme of 'Naesoong Story.'
Painter Kim Hyun Jung majored in Oriental Painting and Business Administration at Seoul National University and is currently pursuing her doctoral degree at the same university's graduate school.
She became known to the public through her somewhat unconventional paintings of young women in hanbok eating hamburgers and riding motorcycles, and caused a stir when every piece in her exhibition themed on 'Naesoong' sold out completely.
Selected in 2017 for Forbes Asia's '30 Under 30,' Kim has held solo exhibitions at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the National Assembly, the Seoul Arts Center, and New York's Metropolitan Museum, and is drawing attention as a promising figure in the Korean art world for her fresh ideas and modes of expression.
Beyond her creative work, she has also been narrowing the gap between art and the public through corporate collaborations, lectures, writing, and communication with the public via social media and her blog.
In this lecture, under the theme 'Naesoong Story,' she will discuss her work — which breaks the conventional mold of Oriental painting to capture 21st-century customs — as well as the various attempts she has made to lower the barrier between art and the public.
Jangseong Academy, held every Thursday with a leading expert from a different field each week, runs at the small performance hall of the Jangseong Culture and Arts Center from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, featuring a 30-minute opening performance by local artists followed by a 90-minute special lecture. It is a public lecture open to anyone who wishes to attend.
