In collaboration with Megastudy, I reinterpreted "Seodang" (The Village School), one of the masterpieces from the genre-painting album of Kim Hong-do (김홍도, an 18th-century Joseon master of genre painting), as a 21st-century pungsokhwa (풍속화, genre painting of everyday life).
Students sit in a circle around a classroom, studying as they watch Chairman Son Ju-eun's lecture through a screen and digital devices.
The student in the center is in tears — maybe for not finishing the homework, maybe for falling behind — while classmates look on and laugh.
The students are reading "The Go-3 Revolution," a book by Chairman Son Ju-eun. After many years running an exam academy, he distills the admissions strategy he wants to pass on to students into this "X-file."
Written in Son Ju-eun's own hand, the message on the blackboard — "the term is the concept itself" — carries the affection he wants to convey to his students.
A village school with screens and digital devices — isn't that fun?
