A ritual need not be grand to help us bear another day. A small rest moves a person for longer than we expect. 〈Sauna of the 21st Century : Nobless Ceremony〉 began with the familiar time spent sweating in the ochre clay room and then resting over sikhye and boiled eggs. Going in for the sake of a diet and ending up savoring the pleasure of eating felt, if anything, like the most honest kind of rest. Even the trivial act of cracking an eggshell with a ‘tap’ becomes a ritual that releases the tension of a weary day. Come to think of it, what gets a person moving again is more often a small moment of recharging like this than a great resolution. So the ‘nobleness’ in the title lies not in anything grand, but closer to the ordinary time of setting everything down for a while and looking after oneself.
