[Livestock Newspaper, reporter Shin Jeong-hun] NongHyup Economic Holdings' Livestock Economy Division (CEO Kim Tae-hwan) held the "Symposium on Establishing a Hanwoo Culture for the Year of the Ox" on April 29 in the main auditorium of the NongHyup head office. The symposium was held in compliance with COVID-19 quarantine guidelines, and was also live-streamed via social media to minimize the number of attendees.

The symposium was organized by NongHyup's Livestock Economy Division to mark the Year of the Ox by adding value and culture to Hanwoo beef and promoting its development into a sustainable future industry. Sponsored by the Sharing Livestock Movement Headquarters, the symposium was attended by livestock organization leaders including members of the National Livestock Cooperatives Operating Council, the Association of Hanwoo Cooperative Chairpersons, and other livestock cooperative chairs.

The symposium opened with a video congratulatory address by Lee O-ryeong, honorary professor at Ewha Womans University and Korea's first Minister of Culture, and proceeded with a keynote address on "Koreans' Special Love for Hanwoo" by cartoonist Heo Young-man, known for "Sikgaek" (The Gourmet), followed by presentations by NongHyup Livestock Economy CEO Kim Tae-hwan, Korean painter Kim Hyun Jung and others, and a panel discussion.

CEO Kim Tae-hwan presented on "Dreaming of a Hanwoo Culture Renaissance," saying, "The Hanwoo industry is enjoying unprecedented prosperity, but many farming households feel anxious about tomorrow. Going forward, Hanwoo must be more than just meat — and that something more is culture. We will promote our Hanwoo culture year-round through strategies of familiarization, knowledge-building and issue-raising to establish Hanwoo culture."

Korean painter Kim Hyun Jung, known as the "idol of Korean painting," gave a presentation on the theme "Cattle in Famous Paintings," introducing cattle in history and in famous Korean and international paintings, and discussing the role of cattle throughout Korean culture and art.

In the panel discussion, moderated by honorary professor Min Seung-gyu of Hankyong National University, the presenters discussed, under the theme of Hanwoo culture and value development, how to add value to Hanwoo and build a culture around it — so the public can share and connect with that value — rather than treating it merely as a food product.
