To mark the Chuseok season, Shinsegae Gallery Incheon is holding Korean painter Kim Hyun Jung's exhibition 'Naesoong' through the 26th.
The 'Naesoong series' represents artist Kim Hyun Jung's distinctive world of work. She stages humorous scenes by contrasting the unrefined, unceremonious behavior of a woman in elegant hanbok with props that carry today's zeitgeist.
Through this method, Kim Hyun Jung's work has earned praise as a 21st-century genre painting that wittily combines the traditional and the contemporary.
The artist first paints the figure nude, then applies her own dyed hanji paper to the upper garment to express the texture of hanbok. The lower skirt is rendered semi-transparent with ink-and-color technique, revealing the line of the body beneath to express the feeling that 'the inside is clearly visible.'
Through self-portraits of the artist living various everyday moments while wearing hanbok, the work freely expresses emotion and honestly discloses a self bound by others' gaze, in the process of finding oneself.
The work 'Acha' captures the flustered moment when an elegantly dressed woman's shoe suddenly slips off while walking. The artist explains: "I think life may just be a repetition of moments of 'oops.' Mistakes we know are wrong yet keep repeating. Perhaps that's what makes life more interesting."
The works '#Snow White-gram' and 'Insta-ya, Insta-ya, who's the fairest of them all?' reflect the reality of SNS today.
Snow White, living in a room infested with cockroaches, posts a photo pretending to have traveled somewhere scenic, and the witch, believing this fake photo to be real and growing jealous, prepares to travel with her passport in hand.
The story within these works is one that today's real-life SNS users can fully relate to and laugh along with.
In this way, Kim Hyun Jung's Naesoong series conveys a cheerful insight into one's true self and life, fully revealing the artist's philosophy of dreaming of a society where art breathes within everyday life.
