The Korean Cultural Center in Germany announced it will hold a solo exhibition, '21st Century Genre Painting: Naesoong Story,' by Kim Hyun Jung — an idol of the Korean painting world who is creating a new archetype for Korean genre painting — at its gallery in Berlin from May 19 to June 25.
Artist Kim Hyun Jung is recognized for pursuing bold departures from traditional Korean painting in both content and form, creating a new archetype for Korean painting.
By having traditional dress coexist with modern daily life, and giving visual form to the 'Naesoong' of a woman who is outwardly and inwardly different, she boldly breaks with the common assumption of how one 'should' act in a given situation.
She is also known as an idol of the Korean painting world with passionate fans, promoting Korean painting through social media and communicating actively with her audience.
This exhibition presents a total of 19 works depicting the 'Naesoong women' that run through the artist's body of work.
▲ Naesoong: Landing the Big One
Artist Kim Hyun Jung says that she captures in her work 'Naesoong' — every attitude of showing an outward appearance that differs from one's true feelings in order to be seen and evaluated favorably by others — caricaturing our candid, dual-natured selves while also expressing the gap between ideal and reality.
▲ Naesoong: Where Is Your Rainbow?
Kwon Se-hoon, director of the Korean Cultural Center in Germany, said, "We expect that the beauty of traditional Korean painting, combined with the desires of modern life and the artist's distinctive wit and humor overflowing from within it, will resonate strongly and be well received by German audiences too."
The opening ceremony for this exhibition will be held together with artist Kim Hyun Jung at the Korean Cultural Center in Germany on May 19 at 6 p.m.
