[Edaily reporter Oh Hyun-joo] A woman sits boldly astride a motorcycle. The illusion of a neatly combed, tied-up hairstyle shatters the moment one's eye reaches the legs revealed beneath the sheer, see-through hanbok. Korean painter Kim Hyun Jung (28), who portrays a 21st-century genre painting centered on 'the woman in hanbok,' is the artist behind this work. With her so-called 'Naesoong series,' she has caused a sensation in the rigid world of Korean painting through bold brushwork. 'Taste Sniper' (2016) is a bold, even audacious, ink-and-color painting. It breaks two frameworks: the subject matter confined within traditional Korean painting, and the desire confined within herself. It seems that no conservative criticism of being 'too commercial' can hold her back.
On view through the 4th of next month at Gallery Grimson in Insa-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, as part of the group exhibition 'Figure-Insight.' Ink and color with collage on hanji. 129×166cm. Collection of the artist. Courtesy of Gallery Grimson.
