The '#VOGUERAM Project': digital cover artworks reinterpreted by young Korean artists to celebrate Vogue Korea's 20th anniversary. Today's artist is Oriental painter 'Kim Hyun Jung (KIM, HYUNJUNG).'
A work by Oriental painter Kim Hyun Jung, who reconstructed the Vogue Korea cover through her own 'Naesoong Girl' series, presenting the cover as a picture-within-a-picture set inside a frame. "The moment the Naesoong Girl begins a new game signifies a new beginning for Vogue Korea. The white ball marked with the number '20' represents Vogue Korea's present at its 20th anniversary, with the hope that it will keep thriving through a wonderful game all the way to its 30th and 40th anniversaries. I've hidden Vogue Korea's symbolism throughout the work. The picture within the picture, set in the frame, is the Naesoong Girl looking at Vogue Korea!"
Oriental painter Kim Hyun Jung (@hyunjung_artist) — after graduating from arts middle and high school, she majored in Oriental painting in college and graduate school. Her 2014 solo exhibition 'Naesoong Olympics' at Gana Art Center was recorded as the most-visited exhibition since the gallery opened. At an exhibition held at the Seoul Arts Center, 13 of the works shown sold within two days, drawing intense public attention. In January 2016, she held an invited solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and participated as the youngest artist in an exhibition spotlighting the history of Korean painting at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. In March 2016, she held the solo exhibition 'Naesoong Amusement Park.' A young artist also selected by Dong-A Ilbo as one of the '100 People Who Will Shine Korea in 10 Years.'
"This work, 'Narcissus,' was the very first piece I presented under the theme of 'Naesoong.' I thought this scene symbolized Naesoong well. It's personally meaningful to me since it also won the Gold Prize at the Korea Women's Art Grand Prize Exhibition. 'Naesoong Story' is my confessional self-portrait, a departure from 'gaze' and 'convention.' From adolescence, I was sensitive to other people's gaze. I lived by the standard of others' eyes rather than the life I wanted. To find my faded sense of self, I began the work 'Naesoong Story' through repeated self-questioning."
