Even wanting to live perfectly, the heart often falls out of step with itself. Small contradictions reveal themselves in unexpected moments. Oops (我差) began by looking back on eating a simple, humble meal while still refusing to give up a favorite brand of coffee. The artist found it contradictory that she felt no hesitation over simple food, yet couldn’t let go of taste and satisfaction when it came to coffee alone. Two meanings of ‘oops’ overlap in this work: one is the self-reflective sense held in the Chinese characters 我 (‘I’) and 差 (‘lacking’), a way of looking back on one’s own shortcomings; the other is the exclamation ‘oops!’ that bursts out in a moment of mistake — like coffee spilling into a bag.
